FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Coming this fall, LogTen Pro for iPad will be integrated with Aspen Avionics’ Connected™ Pilot, enabling pilots to download flight time data direct from an aircraft’s panel. Pilots will be able to fill in flight data at “the touch of a button, before they set foot on the tarmac.”

Portland, OR USA – August 10th, 2011 – Coradine Aviation Systems announced today that they will be one of the first aviation software companies to integrate with Aspen Avionics’ recently announced Connected™ Pilot, the initial product of their Connected Panel™ line of products.

Connected Panel™ includes hardware, software, and application components that provide two-way wireless communications between panel avionics and personal smart devices to streamline flight-related activities. Connected™ Pilot is the first Connected Panel™ hardware and software system, and will list for under $2500. It will be available for installation via Aspen’s authorized dealer network by the end of 2011 when Aspen’s Connected™ Pilot app, designed for the iPad, will be available via the iTunes store.

In conjunction with the launch, Coradine, developer of the leading logbook software for the iPad, Mac and iPhone, will release an update to LogTen Pro for iPad that will work seamlessly with Connected™ Pilot. LogTen Pro for iPad users who install Connected™ Pilot will be able to download flight data directly from the aircraft panel before they leave the cockpit through a wireless connection – reducing data entry time and ensuring 100% accuracy.

Noah Lieberman, CEO for Coradine said, “Ever since launching LogTen Pro for iPad we’ve been hoping for this kind of development in the cockpit. This integration between LogTen Pro for iPad and Connected™ Pilot will mean pilots can complete log entries at the touch of a button, before they set foot on the tarmac. It’s another exciting step toward making the iPad the EFB of choice for pilots.”

“We are excited to have Coradine join our growing list of Connected Panel Partners,” says Brad Hayden, Vice President of Marketing for Aspen Avionics. “The integrated functionality of LogTen Pro for the iPad with Connected Panel™ demonstrates the increased capability and superior user experience this platform can provide. We look forward to working with Coradine as we explore new ways to revolutionize the general aviation cockpit.”

As a long time software engineer, patent holder, and the founder and CEO of Coradine, where our whole business is aviation software, the recent shut down of Runway Finder has left me concerned and troubled. In our rapidly evolving world, technology plays an ever growing role. At the same time, it moves so fast that it seems to often out pace our understanding let alone the policies and procedures that government and society have tried to put in place as tools to protect innovation. Inventors should have the right to protect their invention, but especially when it comes to software, this can be anything but black and white.

There are pros and cons to patents in general as you can read in the rationale section of the Wikepedia entry on patents. From a business perspective it’s reasonable to argue that without some sort of guarantee that your idea won’t be immediately copied when brought to market companies and individuals would be likely to keep their inventions as secret as possible and/or simply be less likely to invest in research and development at all. This could lead to great inventions never reaching the public, or never being invented at all which is clearly not great. But it’s a really big world, and some things seem to require the ever scarce “common sense”. The exceptionally lengthy patent application process can take years, for obvious reasons, but this only serves to aggravate the issue.

It’s a pretty safe bet more than one person invented a chair around the same time in different parts of the world. While it may be good for your business if you could prevent anyone else from making chairs, there’s no reasonable person that would consider it fair to coerce everyone else making chairs to pay you for the right of selling what they make just because it’s similar to yours; particularly when it’s clear they didn’t steal your design. The internet has made the world smaller, but with the advent of the nearly ubiquitous high speed network access and web technologies, and the plethora of information available it’s perfectly logical to use it for all manner of aviation tasks, such as say, flight planning. Patents are intended to protect specific innovations; using them as a business weapon to try and strong arm your competition based on overly broad, generalized concepts seems like a clear sign of a fear that you cannot compete. It’s even harder for a citizen to look the other way when this comes at a time when multiple companies have been providing similar services for years. To add insult to injury, it seems that in the case of FlightPrep and their broad patent relating to seemingly any flight planning system that gets information over the internet, it’s only the giant organizations like Jeppesen that have the resources to defend themselves legally that have the option to ignore the letters demanding license fees. The smaller developers, or in my opinion, the innovators, are forced to shut down because they cannot put up millions of dollars to defend themselves from an organization who has been given the “legal” right to stop them from working on their inventions.

Competition breeds excellence. Embrace it, and let the best technology win. Never stop innovating, and you will succeed.

Sincerely,

Noah Lieberman

Founder and CEO, Coradine

Now you can track trips independently of flights, enabling you to track all your time and expenses (not just flying time) for the trip as well as group legs together for better organization and easier viewing.

Here’s an example of how the new Trips tool works:

STEP 1: Click on “Trips” on the left of the LogTen Pro navigation bar, this is what you’ll see:

Click for larger view

STEP 2: Click the “+” button at the bottom left of the screen to add a new Trip

Click for larger view

STEP 3: You can then either tab through the table itself and enter the details of the trip OR enter details in the “Overview” section lower left of the screen.

Click for larger view

Note that you can choose from a number of different “Types” of time, including Airport Reserve, Business, Commute, Deadhead, Flight Duty, Home Reserve, Non-flying, Personal, Reposition Air or Reposition Ground.

Click for larger view

STEP 4: Enter the Start and End times for the trip. For this example we’re going to use Flight Duty time from 29/09/08 at 1425 through to 30/09/08 at 0325. The flights included in this time-span will automatically appear in the Flight area at the lower right of the screen.

Click for larger view

STEP 5: If you track earnings based on an hourly rate, you can enter this rate in the Overview section and LogTen Pro automatically calculates your earnings.

Click for larger view

STEP 6: You can also track expenses for your trip, whatever the expense, you have total control and flexibility with LogTen Pro Mac. Add or remove expenses simply by clicking the “+” or “-” sign at the bottom left of the Expenses tab.

Click for larger view

Featuring a dramatically simplified interface that gets out of your way, and yet provides even more power and flexibility; LogTen Pro 5 makes managing your flight time eaiser then ever before!

Need to be convinced? Download free trial copy and try before you buy!

If you’re looking for LogTen Mobile for iPhone and iTouch, click here.

More for everyone

LogTen Pro 5 features a new built in database that includes over 27,000 landing facilities (we now refer to them as “places”) including airports, heliports, seaports, gliderports and even balloon ports! With every type of pilot in nearly 200 countries using LogTen Pro, we recognize that just having airports in the database is limiting. Now you can add anything from an oil rig, to a lake, a VOR or your neighbors grass strip.

Now that you’ve got all this data, you need a quick way to find places! We’ve added a new picker that pops up as soon as you start typing, allowing you to instantly find the place you’re looking for!

Flying scheduled ops?

If you fly for an airline, you’re going to love this: new in LogTen Pro 5 you can now import your crew schedules! Simply log into your crew portal, copy your schedule and paste it into the schedule importer in LogTen Pro; we do the rest! Sync with LogTen Mobile and when you fly your trips all you have to do is enter the aircraft registration and actual times and press the sync button when you get home!

Power to the pilots

We’ve also enhanced our Smart Group technology to allow you even more powerful ways to filter your flights and keep track of all the crazy currency and duty regulations you can throw at it!
Need to search forward in time as well to account for scheduled flights? No problem.
Have a currency that requires 3 hours total combined actual and simulated instrument but no more then 1 hour can be simulated? You got it!

“This is a great tool for pilots, OnTime gives me the ability to immediately provide the information my passengers need. So when a passenger needs to be at a meeting in Paris at 10am on Tuesday, I can tell him in seconds what time weʼll need to leave New York.”

Because FlightLevel and Skylog Pro do not support exporting your data, we’ve developed internal tools to convert their raw databases for use in LogTen Pro! If you’ve been using either of these logbooks on your PC and would like to make the switch to Mac and LogTen Pro, along with LogTen Mobile for iPhone, you’re in luck! Simply email your FlightLevel 2003 (or later) or Skylog Pro v5 database files to us at support@coradine.com and we’ll convert them to LogTen Pro for you!

What to Send Us

FlightLevel 2000 or later
To find your FlightLevel files, look in C:\Program Files\FlightLevelXXXX\Flights where the “XXXX” is the version of Flight Level, probably 2003. Zip up and send us the whole “Flights” folder (it should contain your “.dbf” files).

SkyLog Pro version 5.x
For SkyLog Pro send us your backup file, which should have the .bck extension.

Come fly the [user] friendly skies!

Technically…

At Coradine our goal is to provide the best possible user experience for pilots, which is why we choose to develop for the Macintosh. Because of this goal, and our belief that Apple computers running Mac OS X provide the most reliable and easy to use system available, LogTen Pro leverages powerful frameworks provided solely by the Mac OS X operating system. Similarly, the iPhone provides an unsurpassed mobile platform that provides an incredible tool for pilots on the go, and benefits from the same powerful underlying technology as Mac OS X.

Philosophically…

We seriously considered developing a Windows version, but ultimately decided it is more important to do what we love. Because of this passion, we can focus on delivering excellence, with pride, rather than simply doing something for the money. Personally, I have spent 15 years developing software for the Mac, and there is a reason: unparalleled user experience. Developing LogTen Pro for Windows would mean a complete rewrite of the application, taking time and resources away from our primary goal of providing the best possible experience for all of our users, current and future. While I understand that bringing LogTen Pro to Windows could dramatically increase revenue, the cost to the quality of our products, the ability to provide excellent service, the love of our jobs, and the pride we take would ultimately outweigh the monetary gain.

Coradine was started by me so I could turn my passions into independence, and because the fruits of these passions are recognized and appreciated by our customers I am finally able to do what I enjoy. Endangering these passions by developing for platforms which do not inspire me endangers all that I strive for in Coradine, and that is a sacrifice I will not make.

That might be more than you wanted to know, but I hope you understand. It’s a little like telling a pilot they should become a bus driver because there’s a lot more buses in the world… it may be similar, and it may get you from point A to point B, but it sure isn’t the same!! There’s a reason we fly, and for most of us it’s not just the destination, it’s the journey…

Sincerely,
