Now you can track trips independently of flights, enabling you to track all your time and expenses (not just flying time) for the trip as well as group legs together for better organization and easier viewing.

Here’s an example of how the new Trips tool works:

STEP 1: Click on “Trips” on the left of the LogTen Pro navigation bar, this is what you’ll see:

Click for larger view

STEP 2: Click the “+” button at the bottom left of the screen to add a new Trip

Click for larger view

STEP 3: You can then either tab through the table itself and enter the details of the trip OR enter details in the “Overview” section lower left of the screen.

Click for larger view

Note that you can choose from a number of different “Types” of time, including Airport Reserve, Business, Commute, Deadhead, Flight Duty, Home Reserve, Non-flying, Personal, Reposition Air or Reposition Ground.

Click for larger view

STEP 4: Enter the Start and End times for the trip. For this example we’re going to use Flight Duty time from 29/09/08 at 1425 through to 30/09/08 at 0325. The flights included in this time-span will automatically appear in the Flight area at the lower right of the screen.

Click for larger view

STEP 5: If you track earnings based on an hourly rate, you can enter this rate in the Overview section and LogTen Pro automatically calculates your earnings.

Click for larger view

STEP 6: You can also track expenses for your trip, whatever the expense, you have total control and flexibility with LogTen Pro Mac. Add or remove expenses simply by clicking the “+” or “-” sign at the bottom left of the Expenses tab.

Click for larger view

Have fun!

Smart Groups is one of the most powerful features of LogTen Pro. Smart Groups lets you quickly view your totals based on any attribute of your flight. So you can easily and quickly see totals in the left hand ‘groups’ column of the LogTen Pro “Flights” View.

Click for larger view

When you launch Logten Pro 5 for the first time, you start off with a few standard smart groups including Currency information for Day/Night and Instrument time. As well as duty limits including 12 months and 28 days.

These standard Smart Groups are the tip of the iceberg! Dig a little deeper and you will find an incredibly flexible and versatile tool which enables you to:

Track totals for ANY criteria you choose, and you can customize criteria specific to your situation … want to see flights logged with night time greater than 2 hrs in a B757? No problem.

Look forward and back in time – so you can make a “30 in 7″ duty limit that looks back 6 days and forward 24 hours for example

Set maximums for currency groups, enabling you to handle currencies that require a certain amount of one thing but no more then X of another. E.g. 3 hours total instrument, but no more then 1 hour simulated.

Choose from several options for what data to display next to the group, instead of just Total Time you can choose from PIC Time, Landings, or a count of matching flights

Here’s an example of how to do it:

STEP 1: Click the “+” button at the bottom left of the main screen. Alternatively click “File” >> “New Smart Group”.

Click for larger view

STEP 2: Name your smart group. For this example, we’re going to sort for Noah based on Aircraft type (C172) and time logged as PIC. So we’ll name the group Noah PIC in C172.

Click for larger view

STEP 3: Set the date range. You can look back as well as forward to keep an eye not only on where you’ve been but make sure you’re not hitting limits any time in the near future. For this example, we’re going to look at PIC time logged in C172 for the last 12 months.

Click for larger view

STEP 4: Choose your criteria. Please play around with this, you’ll see that with the ability to customize criteria, you can pretty much sort based on anything your heart desires. For this example, we choose Aircraft, Aircraft Type and Begins with C172 … then we hit the “+” button to add a second set of criteria.

Click for larger view

STEP 5: We set a second criteria for “Crew”, “PIC”, “Begins with”, Noah.

Click for larger view

Note the new feature in LogTen Pro 5 below the criteria field. There is a box that you can tick to “Treat criteria as” minimums or maximums. This enables you to easily track goals or limits. For an example of how to use this feature, please click here.

STEP 6: If you wish, you can manually key-in color thresholds to let you know when we’re getting close to your specified limit or goal.

Click for larger view

Click OK and voila, your new smart group is tracking your totals.

If you have a need to track more than one approach type on a given flight, there’s actually more than one way to do this in LogTen Pro, depending on the level of detail you’d like to record.

You can either use the approach type to enter as much text as you like, so for example you might enter VOR 2; ILS 1; NDB 2. This gets the job done, and may be the simplest approach, however it does not allow you to keep running totals of the various types of approaches you’ve done.

If you want more accuracy, such as the ability to track the exact number for each different type of approach and see running totals for them, then I recommend customizing some of the custom operations fields. If you click the “Configure” button in the toolbar and then go to the “Operations” tab, you’ll find that there are ten custom fields that you can change to whatever you like. So you could make separate fields for ILS, NDB, VOR, all the types you want to track, then for each flight simply enter the number in each box!

Want to change one of the column headings in one of the standard reports? Here’s how you do it. For this tutorial we’ll be using the ASA Master Pilot log template. We’ll replace the “Rotorcraft” column with “Jet”.

Step One: Preparation

In the Mac OS X Finder, navigate to your home folder, and then into Library/Application Support/LogTen Pro/

From the “Sample Report Templates” folder copy the “ASA Pilot Master Log” folder into the “My Report Templates” folder

From the new “ASA Pilot Master Log” folder you just copied in the “My Report Templates” folder, open “pageOne_header.html” with your favorite text editor. Mac OS X comes with “TextEdit” which will work just fine.

NOTE IF YOU’RE USING TEXT EDIT:TextEdit will try and display the HTML as it would appear in a browser which is no good if you need to edit the code! So before opening files in TextEdit, open TextEdit and go to the preferences, Switch to the “Open and Save” tab and check the first box to “Ignore rich text commands in HTML files”.

Step Two: Changing the Column Header and Footer

In pageOne_header.html replace:

<th id="rotorcraft">Rotorcraft</th>

With this:

<th id="jet">Jet</th>

Note: The “id” value is for use in the CSS. You don’t have to change it but it just makes things more clear. So for example if you wanted to change the width of the column, you would set this in the style.css file. Right now it does not have an entry in the style.css, but if you wanted to set it you would simply make a new line like this:

#jet{width:0.5in;}

This would set the width of the column with an “id” of “jet” to half an inch.

Now we need to change the Totals so they will display jet time and not rotorcraft time! So we need to replace:

<td><?ltp keypath=@sum.flight_category2; scope=page; ?></td>

with:

<td><?ltp keypath=@sum.flight_engineType1; scope=page; ?></td>

Note: category, class, and engine type time values are available for all values listed in the aircraft type tab of the resource manager in the order they appear there. So for example if you clicked on the Engine Type menu you will see Jet, Turbine, Turbo-Prop, Piston, etc. Piston would be referenced as flight_engineType4.

That takes care of the page total, but we still need to replace the balance forward and to date totals so, replace:

<td><?ltp keypath=@sum.flight_category2; scope=forward; ?></td>

with:

<td><?ltp keypath=@sum.flight_engineType1; scope=forward; ?></td>

and replace:

<td><?ltp keypath=@sum.flight_category2; ?></td>

with:

<td><?ltp keypath=@sum. flight_engineType1; ?></td>

Step Three: Changing the Row

This is the easiest part! We’re almost done. You can close the pageOne_header.html file and open pageOne_row.html.
This is probably starting to look at least a little bit familiar.

In pageOne_header.html replace:

<td><?ltp keypath=flight_category2; ?></td> <!-- Rotorcraft -->

with:

<td><?ltp keypath=flight_engineType1; ?></td> <!-- Jet -->

Step Four: Updating the Style

Now that you’ve customized the report, you’ll probably want to change the name so you can find it more easily in LogTen! Open the “style.css” file. At the top you find a section that looks like this:

/*
Report Name: ASA Pilot Master Log™
Description: A LogTen Pro report template style based on the ASA Pilot Master Log™, print out, punch and place in a quality binder for the ultimate presentation.
Version: 1.0
Author: Noah Lieberman
Author URI: http://coradine.com
Credits:

Report Type: twoPage
Rows Per Page: 20
Data Type: Flight
*/

Change the name, description, author, and other attributes as appropriate and save. Now when you go into LogTen Pro and click Reports you’ll see your new report in the list.

Want to change the font?
In the style.css file you can also change things like the font, font sizes, column widths, colours, etc. The handwriting font that we use is called “j.d.”, so if you wanted to use Helvetica for example instead, you could simply search for any occurrence of “j.d.” in the style.css file of your report and replace it with Helvetica, or whatever other font you want!

Enter your total time, and let LogTen Pro do the rest…

In most cases we, as pilots, will need to enter the same value for several types of flight time, and these will be the same for a certain phase of our flying. For example, a student will most likely be entering the same values for Total Time and Dual Received on every flight, at least until they start flying solo. On the other hand, most airline pilots will be entering XC on every flight, so why should they have to type it in every time they enter a flight? They don’t if they’re using LogTen Pro of course.

Most airline pilots will be entering XC on every flight, so why should they have to type it in every time they enter a flight? They don’t have to if they’re using LogTen Pro…

Select the “Time” tab in the Flight Detail view and at the top right press the “Auto” button. Checkboxes will appear next to all your time values. Tick the ones you would like to be automatically updated when the total time changes (you can always override the value if you want it to be different from the total time).

Now whenever the Total Time value is changed, either by typing in a new value, or by changing the Actual Departure or Actual Arrival times the ticked times will be updated as well. When you make that first solo, or get that sweet airline job you’ve worked so hard for, just go back to the Time tab and change it as needed.

What, you don’t want to subtract your night time from your total time with a calculator?

No worries, tracking day time, or any other time not available in LogTen Pro 5.0 by default is quite easy. Simply click the “Configure” button in the toolbar, then on the “Time” tab, change the name of one of the custom fields such as “Custom 1″ to the time you are tracking and tick the box next to it to add it as a new column in the main view. Note: Day times are automatically tracked by default when you enter your total time and night time.

You can now enter values for it, see running totals, and of course use it in smart groups. In case you didn’t know you can also tell LogTen Pro to automatically set this value when you enter a total time for a flight. Select the “Time” tab in the Flight Detail view and at the top right press the “Auto” button. Checkboxes will appear next to all your time values. Tick the ones you would like to be automatically updated when the total time changes (you can always override the value if you want it to be different from the total time).

Need to know when your Biennial Flight Review (BFR) is due? In LogTen Pro 5.0 it’s easy. In fact, no matter when your flight reviews are due, you can track them in LogTen Pro, and easily keep track of how many days you’ve got until it’s “that time” again.

Creating the Smart Group

Quick

Creat a new Smart Group

Name it “BFR”

Set the date to 720 “Days”

Set the criteria to Notes -> Flight Review -> is -> [tick the box]

Tick “Treat criteria as [Minimums] for the period”

Click OK

The Details

We need a smart group much like the default currency groups. Click the “gear” icon at the lower left of the main window to create a new Smart Group. Now in this case we’ll set it up for a biennial flight review, but you can change the time frame as desired.

Now that you have the group, give it a useful name, like “BFR”, and set the date to “720″, then select “Days” in the menu.

Note

We specify it in days because we want it to be specific to the day. Remember that the date increment also effects granularity, meaning that if I selected 2 years, and today was 11-Dec-2006 then the group would match flights back to 1-Jan-2003 because it’s looking for WHOLE years. The same applies to months, which is important if you need to track something, say total time within the last 12 months rolling from the first of the month to today.

Set the criteria to use the “Notes” category, then the “Flight Review” field (a.k.a. “key”), since this is a checkbox field the only option for the “operator” is “is”. Now simply tick the box to indicate we’re looking for flights which have the Flight Review check box ticked.

Make sure you tick the “Treat criteria as Minimums for the period” this will make the result displayed next to the group be the number of days left for the group, otherwise it will just show the total time for the matching flights.

That’s it, click OK to close the Smart Group editor sheet.

Entering a Flight Review

Now you’ve got a group to track them, all you need to do is select the flight when the review took place, and tick the “Fligth Review” box on the Notes tab.

Now whenever you have a flight review, just tick the box, and your currency will stay, well, current.

Like many mac applications, the main “table view” in LogTen Pro has several “standard” features that are very useful. By standard, I mean they function the same way columns do in applications like Mail, iTunes, etc. These features are important and allow you to do some useful things very easily.

Adding, Removing & Re-naming Columns and Fields

In LogTen Pro you have even more control. Select “Configure LogTen Pro” from the Manage Menu; you will be presented with a set of tabs corresponding to the tabs you see at the bottom of the main window in the “Flight Detail” view. Here you can change which columns are visible in the main view simply by ticking the box next to the appropriate name. You can also change the name of any column to anything you like. Want to track autorotations for helo work? Click on the Landings tab, tick the box next to “Custom Ldg 1″ then change the text to “Autorotations”…

This flexibility allows you to use LogTen Pro to track virtually anything. Prefer your columns to be in Norwegian? No problem.

IMPORTANT: Changing the TITLE of a field does NOT change it’s function. So if you change the Title of “Dual Received” to “Pilot in Command” all your “Pilot in Command” time will appear in the Dual column on reports. Reports reference specific fields no matter what their title and cannot dynamically guess what you meant by looking at your title.

Organizing

Familiar to nearly all mac users is the concept of “drag-and-drop”. To re-arrange columns in any table in LogTen simply click and hold on the header (where the title is) and drag it to the position you would like.
By arranging your columns in the same order as a paper logbook or your airlines roster it makes data entry a snap.

Resizing

In a similar fashion to re-arranging, columns can be resized as well. Place your cursor over the dividing line in between columns in the header of the table and you will see it change from the standard arrow to a vertical line with a small arrow pointing in either direction. Now click and drag to make the column larger or smaller.

Sorting

You control sorting by clicking once on a column heading. Click on “Date” and your flights will be sorted by date (the default). A small triangle appears in the column heading indicating the sort direction. Point up, or smallest to largest, means the data is sorted ascending, so for a date this would mean the oldest first. Click the column again, and the sort order reverses.

It’s important to note that the way new flights are added is affected by sort order. If your data is sorted ascending (smallest to largest) then new flights will be added below the current selection (if there’s no selection they’re added at the end). If your data is sorted descending, (for dates this would be newest at the top) then new flights are added above the current selection. This applies to Next Leg, Duplicate, and Return Trip as well.
