When you use LogTen Pro on both your iPhone and your Mac you get the peace of mind of knowing that you have a full backup of your data on both devices. Should either one suffer an unfortunate accident, you can easily restore all your data from the other device!

Besides providing speed and a large display, the Mac version also offers some invaluable tools:

Import your existing data from virtually any other logbook software, or spreadsheet

Airline schedule importing

Configure times to be auto entered

Print directly from your logbook (on the iPhone you can generate the report and upload to logten.com, then print from any browser)

Create folders and complex nested Smart Groups, Currency Groups, and Limits Groups to track virtually anything you need to know about your flight time

Track inspections for your aircraft

Learn why pilots love LogTen Pro!

Now you can track trips independently of flights, enabling you to track all your time and expenses (not just flying time) for the trip as well as group legs together for better organization and easier viewing.

Here’s an example of how the new Trips tool works:

STEP 1: Click on “Trips” on the left of the LogTen Pro navigation bar, this is what you’ll see:

Click for larger view

STEP 2: Click the “+” button at the bottom left of the screen to add a new Trip

Click for larger view

STEP 3: You can then either tab through the table itself and enter the details of the trip OR enter details in the “Overview” section lower left of the screen.

Click for larger view

Note that you can choose from a number of different “Types” of time, including Airport Reserve, Business, Commute, Deadhead, Flight Duty, Home Reserve, Non-flying, Personal, Reposition Air or Reposition Ground.

Click for larger view

STEP 4: Enter the Start and End times for the trip. For this example we’re going to use Flight Duty time from 29/09/08 at 1425 through to 30/09/08 at 0325. The flights included in this time-span will automatically appear in the Flight area at the lower right of the screen.

Click for larger view

STEP 5: If you track earnings based on an hourly rate, you can enter this rate in the Overview section and LogTen Pro automatically calculates your earnings.

Click for larger view

STEP 6: You can also track expenses for your trip, whatever the expense, you have total control and flexibility with LogTen Pro Mac. Add or remove expenses simply by clicking the “+” or “-” sign at the bottom left of the Expenses tab.

Click for larger view

Have fun!

At the top of the main window is a row of tabs that conveniently allows you to access all the different aspects of your logbook.

Flights

Takes you to the flight view window, where you can add, remove, sort, and edit your flights. You can drag and drop columns to change their order in the table and use the tab key to quickly enter info into a flight, or enter more detailed info in the detail panel at the bottom. You can even change the names of the fields using Manage -> Configure LogTen Pro menu item (be careful though, because no matter what you change the name to, the function of the field stays the same). For more details see the Customizing LogTen category.

The smart groups and limits panel to the left is another powerful feature that allows you to sort on any data available in your flights, aircraft, types, limits, dates and times. For more about smart groups see the Smart Groups category.

Delete

This may seem rather obvious. It’s function is to delete the selected flight(s), however, two things of note: hitting the “Delete” key does the same thing. Before the flights are actually deleted a warning comes up asking if you’re sure you want to delete the flight(s). As you may have found in many applications the “Option” key is used to modify a behaviour in some way. In this case, if you’re really sure you want to delete the flights, simply hold down option when you hit delete and you won’t get the warning. Poof.

New Flight

Create’s a new flight above or below the current selection depending on the sort order.

Duplicate

If you’ve experimented with this function you may be raising your hand about now to point out that it’s not technically a duplicate of the selected flight. You’re correct. In this instance it’s much more useful to only copy certain data from the flight we’re “Duplicating”.

This function will create a new flight, and copy the following items from whatever flight was selected when you hit the button (if more than one flight was selected the first one will be used):

From and To Airports

Aircraft and Aircraft Type

Total Time

Cross Country

Remarks

Next Leg

Similar to the Duplicate function, this will create a new flight and assume the following items from the currently selected flight:

Flight Date

Aircraft and Aircraft Type

Takes the arrival (to) airport of the selected flight as it’s departure (from) airport

Return Trip

Exactly the same as Duplicate, except that it reverses the From and To airports.

Reports

Opens the Reports window where you can generate, view and print various reports. For more details see the Reports category.

Types

This opens the Aircraft Types window. Many of the standard types of planes are in our database and get automatically recorded for you when you enter their identifier into the Flight view. Here you can view which aircraft and flights have been recorded for each type, and edit details about it. For more details and to learn all the things you can do here, you want to view the Managing Types category.

Aircraft

This will show the flights grouped by your individual aircraft, click on one to see which flights you have entered for that aircraft. Check out Managing Your Aircraft for more information.

Places

Places shows you all the airports you have input in the Flights view. Most of them will have all the location and time zone information automatically entered for you from our database of 27,000+ airports, however you can add your own if you need to. See more at Managing Airports.

People

View and edit the information about the people you fly with. Click on a name to see all the flights they are on and what role they had, add a picture or edit contact details.

Certificates

Keep track of your certificates by type and expiration. You can attach pictures to each one for your reference.

Search

Here you can quickly type in a quick search (Located Here). Looking for all flights with Bob? Just type Bob in the search box and any flights where Bob was a crew member will be displayed. Flights with a certain remark, or aircraft, etc. If it’s something you want to do regularly think about creating a smart group, it will be much faster, as the quick search field has to search many different fields to see if there’s a match.

The Owner and Activation code do not match

Make sure you copy and paste BOTH the owner (email) and activation code from your original receipt email. If you’re using an upgrade license enter the new upgrade license first, you will then be prompted for your qualifying older license.

The license you are using does not match the version of LogTen Pro you’re trying to activate

You can verify the version of LogTen Pro you have by selecting “About LogTen Pro” from the “LogTen Pro” menu. Version 4 licenses start with “LTP4″ and version 5 licenses start with “LTP5″.

Wondering why the totals displayed next to your Smart Groups don’t update instantly?

Basically a smart group can have criteria for any attribute of a flight, and so ANY change to a flight could effect ANY group. This would mean that inorder to keep them up-to-date in real time every group would have to be re-calculated every time you changed ANY value on ANY flight. It takes an average of 200 milliseconds per group. By default there’s 56 groups, that means you’d be looking at an 11 second pause every time you changed a value and tabbed to a new field.

Group totals are all updated every time you open the logbook so your currency numbers will be up to date.

(Updates at startup occur approximately one every second so that you can keep using LogTen Pro while they’re updating. This means your totals should all be accurate within about a minute.)

At some point I will develop a batching and multi-threading mechanism that will track the fact you made changes, queue them up, and then update the groups totals in the background when you’re idle.

Like many mac applications, the main “table view” in LogTen Pro has several “standard” features that are very useful. By standard, I mean they function the same way columns do in applications like Mail, iTunes, etc. These features are important and allow you to do some useful things very easily.

Adding, Removing & Re-naming Columns and Fields

In LogTen Pro you have even more control. Select “Configure LogTen Pro” from the Manage Menu; you will be presented with a set of tabs corresponding to the tabs you see at the bottom of the main window in the “Flight Detail” view. Here you can change which columns are visible in the main view simply by ticking the box next to the appropriate name. You can also change the name of any column to anything you like. Want to track autorotations for helo work? Click on the Landings tab, tick the box next to “Custom Ldg 1″ then change the text to “Autorotations”…

This flexibility allows you to use LogTen Pro to track virtually anything. Prefer your columns to be in Norwegian? No problem.

IMPORTANT: Changing the TITLE of a field does NOT change it’s function. So if you change the Title of “Dual Received” to “Pilot in Command” all your “Pilot in Command” time will appear in the Dual column on reports. Reports reference specific fields no matter what their title and cannot dynamically guess what you meant by looking at your title.

Organizing

Familiar to nearly all mac users is the concept of “drag-and-drop”. To re-arrange columns in any table in LogTen simply click and hold on the header (where the title is) and drag it to the position you would like.
By arranging your columns in the same order as a paper logbook or your airlines roster it makes data entry a snap.

Resizing

In a similar fashion to re-arranging, columns can be resized as well. Place your cursor over the dividing line in between columns in the header of the table and you will see it change from the standard arrow to a vertical line with a small arrow pointing in either direction. Now click and drag to make the column larger or smaller.

Sorting

You control sorting by clicking once on a column heading. Click on “Date” and your flights will be sorted by date (the default). A small triangle appears in the column heading indicating the sort direction. Point up, or smallest to largest, means the data is sorted ascending, so for a date this would mean the oldest first. Click the column again, and the sort order reverses.

It’s important to note that the way new flights are added is affected by sort order. If your data is sorted ascending (smallest to largest) then new flights will be added below the current selection (if there’s no selection they’re added at the end). If your data is sorted descending, (for dates this would be newest at the top) then new flights are added above the current selection. This applies to Next Leg, Duplicate, and Return Trip as well.
